Our  safari itinerary can be perfectly timed so that you can watch the migration in any Place it will be. But before the Itinerary let us first enlighten you on the migration’s movement throughout the year.

LATE JANUARY TO MARCH - THE CALVING SEASON
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu

During this season pregnant female wildebeest are attracted to the nutritious grassland which is good for milk production. Calving occurs late January through mid March when over 80% of the female wildebeest give birth over a period of a few weeks. An estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during this period. Due to the large concentration of Wildebeests in this Area, other animals like Lions, Cheetah and Hyenas are attracted and they are easy to spot.  With luck and exceptional guiding, you will have a chance to see thrilling chase and stumbling upon young cubs and the newborn!

APRIL & MAY
Serengeti Western Corridor & Central Serengeti

This season the heavy rains in Tanzania are in full swing and it is considered by many as an off season. You will find many lodges are closed during this time. In May the short grasses are unable to sustain the migration herds therefore it moves towards the Western Corridor where there is long grasses and dependable water

JUNE
Grumeti Area

In June  the Migration continues west, towards the Grumeti river. The fact that June is dry, the Herds will move towards the grumeti river to drink water where it will find huge hungry crocodiles waiting for a chance to catch a meal after a long wait. The forest near the river also harbors lots of buffaloes and elephants.

JULY TO OCTOBER
Northern Serengeti

The herds rapidly consume the grass and water in the Grumeti area and soon it starts to move on. In a typical year the migration can be spread over huge distances, with the first zebra herds arriving in the northern Serengeti by early July and big herds of wildebeest following later in the month. In a dry year, the first wildebeest could be near the Mara River by early July; in a wet year, by mid-August. If conditions are very good (There is plenty of grass and water) the herds will be spread out all the way from Seronera to the Mara River. Typically from late July to mid October the wildebeest reside in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara. The dry season is well under way and the herds congregate near water, especially the Mara River filled with hungry Crocodiles.
To maximize chances of seeing a crossing we advise timing for late August through late September, although crossings, and re-crossings, occur before and after this time period. Crossing are often elusive, rapid experiences.
Mid to late October thunder clouds bring news on the beginning of the short rains and call the migration south.

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER
Southern Serengeti

The herds move south and east with the continuation of rains in November. Approaching December stretches of wildebeest can be seen moving back to the southern Serengeti with its short, rich grasses. The herds arrival from late December into early January marks the completion of a life circle, It is a long and dangerous journey for the wildebeest, but the journey is a must to ensure survival
Day 1: Arusha - Ngorongoro
After breakfast you are met by our professional tour guide/driver, who will deliver a short safari info briefing, after which we travel west to the Ngorongoro crater where we descend 600m into this magnificent crater for a morning, half-day game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely crowded African wildlife areas in the world and is home to an estimated 30,000 animals including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhino. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro National Park supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is the dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. Accommodation for the night will vary depending on the time of the year and also the budget and preference of the traveler.
Day 2: Serengeti
After breakfast you will drive direct to Serengeti. During this drive you will pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area while also doing a game drive on the way. Accommodation for the night will vary depending on the time of the year and also the budget and preference of the traveler located in Central Serengeti.
Day 3: Serengeti
Enjoy a full day of game viewing as you follow the great herds through the Serengeti. Although outnumbered 8 to 1, approximately 200,000 zebra join almost 1.7 million wildebeest in the migration, maintaining their family units of approximately 8 members, each with a dominant stallion. The zebras yelping bark combines with the bleating of the wildebeest to give the typical ‘sound’ of the migration. Lion, cheetah and hyena follow the migration ensuring that only the fittest survive. This is nature’s law of selection at work. Accommodation for the night will vary depending on the time of the year and also the budget and preference of the traveler.
Day 4: Serengeti
Enjoy another full day of game viewing one of the most breathtaking events in the animal kingdom. The wildebeest migrate in search of fresh pasture and water. The rumbling hooves of wildebeest and the clouds of red dust they leave behind symbolize the Serengeti. The strong migratory instinct of these fascinating animals takes them on a journey that crosses crocodile infested rivers, wild currents and passes 1000′s of predators lying in wait for an opportunity to pick off the young, weak and wounded. After an action packed day of game driving you will return to your accommodation.
Day 5: Serengeti - Arusha
After breakfast you will be transferred to Seronera Airstrip where you will say goodbye to your guide and fly back to Arusha where you safari concludes. You may wish to add one of our Extensions as your next destination. Perhaps a Maasai tour or a relaxing beach vacation in Zanzibar.
