MT. MERU TREKKING 3 TO 4 DAYS
The rewarding climb up Mt. Meru passes through forests of dripping Spanish moss and rises to open heath, spiked with giant lobelia plants. Delicate klipspringer antelope watch the progress of hikers from the top of huge boulders, and everlasting flowers cling to the alpine desert underfoot. Once astride the craggy summit, the reward is a sight of Mt. Kilimanjaro, breathtaking in the sunrise.
Arrive in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will arrange a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Arusha at a prior booked hotel as per your requirement (budget or Luxury) where the rest of the day is at leisure. We will gather in the hotel later for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.
DAY 1. Miriakamba hut (2,500m) Full board
We drive from Arusha to Momella gate (1,500m). After a short registration at the gate our walk will begin with full armed ranger escorting us. From Mommella gate to Miriakamba there are two routes: The southern route and the nothern route.
Southern route, 5 hrs walk
Through this route, visotors have the chance to see almost all mammals found in the forest including hornbills, hartlaub's turaco and birds of prey. it is also possible to several species of butterflies such as the mocker swallow tailed, blue swallow tailed, emperor, and mother of pearl butterflies, etc. visitors will pass through the Montane forest where different features such as the fig tree arch, the Maio waterfalls, and different kind of vegetation such as the wild mangoes, African olives, strangler fig and wild elders can be seen.
At about 2,300m, the higher Montane forest begins. Common trees are junipers and popodos. The common beautiful wild flowers are the empetient species, red-hot pokers, orchids,fire ball lilies and gladiolus.
Nothern route, 3-4 hrs walk
this is the shorter and steeper route. Along this route the views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Momella lakes are spectacular. Common mammals along this route are cape buffaloes, Maasai giraffes, Warthogs, Bushbacks, etc. Birds are hartlaubs turaco, white fronted bee-eaters, stonechats, variable sun birds and olive pigeons. common beautiful wildflowers are red-hot pokers, blue violets,cynium, tubalosums and gladiolus.
Dinner and overnight at Meriakamba hut
Momella gate to Meriakamba Hut (Altitude gain 2500m); 5-7 hours walk
DAY 2. Saddle hut (Full board)
After breakfast we start the walk from Meriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru. The walk is a short day but a steep climb and it will take us slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Cone,Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. meru cliff and little Meru. Attractive wild flowers such as the empetient species, red-hot pokers, orchids, fire ball lilies, giant lobelias and everlasting flowers (helcrysum, senecio and alchemilla) can be seen.
After hot lunch at Saddle Hut we can make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb views and acclimatisation just before sunset.
Dinner and overnight night at Saddle Hut
Meriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3500 m.): 3-5 hours walking.
DAY 3: Saddle Hut to the summit to Meriakamba Hut (Full board)
We start early at around 1:30 a.m. to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m.) and on to Cobra Point (4350m). We reach the summit (4,566 m) on time for sunrise, and there is a possibility to see Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. The final part of the climb is along a spectacular narrow ridge line between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater. We take a short rest and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to the Momella gate. The returning transfer will be waiting at Momella Gate to Arusha and to your hotel.
Saddle Hut to the summit to Momella Gate: 12-14 hours walking.
*For climbers going for four days, they will spend a night at Meriakamba Huts (Full board) before descending to Momella gate the next day
